This book is a culmination of four years of exploration into the lives of women who contributed to the people and communities of the magnificent state of New Mexico. The stories represent women with diverse backgrounds whose lives left a lasting legacy to the state.

Our wish is that you will contribute stories to the Blog that we created. One of the most powerful experiences we had in doing the research was exploring the lives of women who were not famous outside of their immediate communities. One of our long-term goals is to expand the forum we created here to share your stories in a much more expansive way.

We are also available to share the stories at your next event. Our presentation “Lessons from the Women Marked for History,” is appropriate for schools workplaces, community center events, among other places. Please contact us about this.

2015 New Mexico Heritage Preservation Award for Individual Achievement
On May 8, 2015, the authors, Phil and Rosanne Archuletta were honored along with a group of other leaders from throughout New Mexico at the 43rd annual Heritage Preservation Awards. The awards are given by the Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Cultural Affairs. They received the award for Individual Achievement because of their publications, as well as their willingness and enthusiasm to do outreach through personal appearances. They travel throughout the southwest and beyond telling the stories of the women honored by the New Mexico Historic markers.

You see them on almost every road trip. Highway signs and mile markers named after people who apparently did something to earn these distinctions. Most of the time you drive by so quickly that little more than the names register. But if you've been through New Mexico, you may also have noticed that many of the historical markers honor women. Women Marked for History fills in the details on the stories behind the names. There are rich and poor, military and civilian, mothers, wives and daughters, but all in some way contributed to the betterment of their communities and their state.
